The most important questions about AFIF – answered directly.
AFIF stands for Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility and is an EU incentive programme of the European Commission. It serves to implement the AFIR regulation and funds the construction of public charging infrastructure for alternative fuels along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). Phase 2 (2024–2026) has a total volume of one billion euros.
M3E handles applications in the road transport sector. Funded measures include the construction of high-power charging stations, hydrogen refuelling stations and megawatt charging stations (MCS) for heavy-duty vehicles.
10% of eligible project costs must be covered by a co-financing partner: 2/3 of the budget by an implementing partner, 1/3 by a public or private financial institution within the EU. A granted financing approval is a mandatory requirement for the application. M3E advises you on identifying suitable co-financing partners.
With the lump sum option, you receive a fixed amount of €20,000–60,000 per charging point – regardless of actual costs. The process is simpler, but the minimum grant is €2m. With co-financing support, 30–70% of eligible project costs are reimbursed; documentation is more demanding, but the minimum grant is only €1m.
All three cut-off dates for the current AFIF call have now passed (September 2024, June 2025 and March 2026). Whether further AFIF calls will follow depends on the European Commission. M3E monitors programme developments continuously and will inform you about new opportunities via our Incentive Alert.
